The First Book Of Nephi- Perseverance, Dedication, Hard Work

Keeping a scripture journal is a great way to find nuggets of things that are important to you in each season of life. As I read the Book of Mormon, from cover to cover, I am curious and interested in what God has to say about grit! Dedication, hard work, perseverance, devotion, enduring to the end, are all characteristics I admire and wish to acquire. God knows what I need to do to get that in my life, so this is a study of each book in the Book of Mormon about people and ideas that embody this.

Summary:

  • Nephi starts a record of his people. Lehi has visions and sees many things of God.
  • Lehi moves his family out of Jerusalem
  • Nephi and his brothers are asked to go to Jerusalem to get the brass plates.
  • Two attempts at getting the plates ended in failure!
  • Nephi kills Laban and got the plates
  • Zoram joins the group
  • Nephi and his brothers return to Lehi and Sariah.
  • Went back again to get Ishamael and his sons and daughters
  • Laman, Lemuel and a few of Ishmaels kids were angry with Nephi and tried to kill him.
  • Lehi has a dream about the tree of life (the goodness of the gospel)

1 Nephi 1:3 I make the record with my own hand.  This must have been hard work! What does it take to make these records back in the day? I know I’ve been meaning to take my own journals and turn them into an actual, consumable record, but I’ve had it on my to do list fora decade!  He didn’t say, “God helped me, although I’m sure God did.. But for some reason, Nephi had to do the work.

1 Nephi 1:12 In Lehi’s vision- and angel told him to read a book, and he read! No drama,no excuses. Just did it.

1 Nephi 2:3 The Lord asked Lehi to move his family, and he was obedient. He had a purpose. He had a duty. He had a goal. Nothing got in his way. In fact, he was SO determined, that he left all  his belongings behind!

1 Nephi 2:19 Nephi is promised blessings because of his diligence.

1 Nephi 3:7 I will go and do the things the Lord commands~ He is a perfect example of grit, diligence, and obedience.

1 Nephi  3:15 On earth, we can not return to God until we accomplish what he sent us here to do.  It is HARD. Nephi had death staring him in the face, and he still decided he wouldn’t go home until he finished his task~

1 Nephi 4:2 Using Moses as an example, Nephi decided, If Moses can do it, so can we!  We can call on the same power to get stuff done that the Lord wants done!  We Call upon God to help us get things done!

1 Nephi 4:6 Went and did even without knowing yet what he should do. Sometimes taking action is the first step~ Just do it.

1 Nephi 4:34 Shouldn’t we be diligent in keeping the commandments?

1 Nephi 5:8 The Lord will give us the POWER to do what he commands us to do.

1 Nephi 7:12 How do we forget the things the Lord does for us?

1 Nephi 7:13 When we are faithful and DO what we are asked, we will be blessed.
